  • May - Impact of ICTs on Development in Sri Lanka : Past, Present and Future, presentation made by Prof. V.K. Samaranayake at the SIDA/BELLANET seminar on Information and Communication Technologies for Development : Promoting Communication Between People and Nations, SIDA, Stockholm 5th May 2000.(PowerPoint slide set available here)

  • May - Project aspects and progress was discussed at a meeting, which was held at DSV. SIDA Participants Dr. Afzal, Prof. Samaranayake, Associate Prof. Love, Swedish supervisors and Ph.D. students attended. After the discussion Ph.D. students presented their current activities and study plains.

  • June - Prof. Benkt Wangler of DSV, University of Stockholm visited Sri Lanka as part of the Sida-IT project and spent the entire day on Tuesday 13th June 2000 at the Uiversity of Colombo.
  • July - Progress of split Ph.D. program discussed at the metting held at ICT.
  • August - The new facilities provided through the Sida/SAREC grant have now made it possible to have two way video conferencing between campuses. This was demonstrated at a meeting in the presence of the Vice-Chancellors, their nominees, the Members of LEARN Management Committee and the Members of Sri Lanka Inter Universities Committee for Computing.   • December - Kasun De Zoysa has obtained the degree of Licentiate of Philosophy in Computer and System Sciences.

  • March - The Research Network Infrastructure Project was formally commissioned on the 23rd of March at the BMICH under the auspices of the University Grants Commission and the Swedish Embassy.



2002
  • March- The ICT Project is being evaluated by Dr Allan Greenberg and Prof Sam Lanfranco.
  • March- Peradeniya Univerisity newtwoek started. It is the largest and most modern network in Sri Lanka.
  • March - Prasad Jayaweera has obtained the degree of Licentiate of Philosophy in Computer and System Sciences.

  • May- Workshops on UN/CEFACT Modeling Methodology and ebXML specifications
    Dr. Gihan, Colombo University-Sri Lanka, has been invited to DSV by the Open ebXML Laboratory May 7-17, In parallel to his visit during May 7 to May 17 of 2002, the Open ebXML Laboratory at DSV has arranged a series of workshops and seminars with the intention of strengthening research collaboration between Sweden and Sri Lanka.   • May - Lalith Premaratne has obtained the degree of Licentiate of Engineering in Computer and Electrical Engineering.

  • June - Kalyani Munasinghe has obtained the degree of Licentiate of Philosophy in Information Technology
    Title of the Thesis:
    On Using Mobile Agents for Load Balancing in High Performance Computing
  • September - With the signing of the Order by Hon Kabir Hashim, Minister of Tertiary Education and Training on 20.8.2002, and its subsequent publication in the government gazette, the University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC) was established with effect from 1.9.2002 as a Center for Higher Learning attached to the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka.

The UCSC was created by the merger of the existing Department of Computer Science(DCS) and the Institute of Computer Technology(ICT), both of the University of Colombo. (Full Story)
