Hey, it's me!

About me

Hi! I'm Filip Thorén, a digital artist and game designer living in Uppsala, Sweden. In my spare time I like playing computer games, modding computer games, reading strange fiction, and collecting Warhammer 40'000 miniatures.

Work history

I've been involved in a number of small projects, most of whom are featured on this site in one form or another. My first "vertical slice"-scale game project, "Y'arr Pirate! - Quest for the Aztec Gold", saw me in the role of sole level designer and environment artist, with the project's lifetime going from December 2014 to the end of May 2015.

Currently I'm engaging myself in a variety of projects while looking for work. I was recently let onboard the TES Renewal project "Skywind", a volunteer effort to recreate the PC RPG "Morrowind" within the engine of its latest sequel "Skyrim", as a level designer. I am also working on two game projects with previous classmates - a card game named "Warlock's Table", and an open-world MMO RPG code-named "ManaCrystal".

Education and tool competences

I have recently finished my bachelor's degree in Game Development (Design) at Stockholm University, in which I have studied courses in level design, 3D modelling, animation, game prototyping, object-oriented programming, game-based learning and project management. For my thesis, "Design Principles in Level Design", I interviewed six level designers working in Sweden in order to record and analyse their common practices.

In my work I prefer to use Blender for 3D modelling, but I also have some experience with Autodesk Maya and Mudbox. I prefer to do my texturing work in Adobe Photoshop, where I also do my digital painting on a Wacom tablet. When making games I am most familiar with the Unity game engine, which I have used extensively at university. I also possess experience using other software, including the Unreal Development Kit and xNormal.

I am a hobbyist modder of various games that interest me, which has given me experience in picking up and utilising various languages and file structures. In regards to coding I have experience making games and products using HTML5 in conjunction with JavaScript (for instance, this website), and also with making small-scale applications in the Java programming language.
