Intention Hierarchy
Guidelines This pattern body presents three alternative/complementary ways of creating the physical infrastructre for enabling knowledge sharing. All three provide a forum for people to communicate:
  1. Flexible offices allow employees to have physical contact with a variation of other employees
  2. Joint work breaks allow for the creation and reinforcement of informal networks
  3. Groupware systems allow for systematic communication, information storage and exchange of ideas.
  4. Networking creates new informal and formal relationships
  5. Teamwork provides for amongst other things cross-functional knowledge dissemination
Of course changing working conditions affects work practices and changing work practices affects working conditions.
The pattern then points not only to  investment in a physical infrastructure but also to creating  the social climate to enable informal interaction for employees.
