Lalith Premaratne has been registered
for his PhD programme at the Department of
Signals and Systems, School of Electrical
Engineering, Chalmers University of
Technology, Gothenborg and he conducts his
research studies at the School of Information
Science, Computer and Electrical Engineering,
Halmstad University and at the Department of
Computer Science, University of Colombo.
His research project is on the recognition of
printed Sinhala characters using image processing
techniques. A comprehensive study has been
carried out for skew correction, recognition and
consequent segmentation of a printed Sinhala
script. The Linear Symmetry which has been used
in many image and signal processing applications
over the past fifteen years, has been
successfully tested for character recognition.
The initial work was presented at a symposium in
Linköping, Sweden and the comprehensive work was
presented at the ACCV2002 conference held in
Melbourne, Australia. The project will be
continued towards a possible contribution
for a Sinhala OCR System.
Lalith Premaratne obtained his Licentiate
in Engineering in May, 2002.
