U.S.A. and European Privacy Protection Legislation

The EU Data Protection Directive has been extended by an agreement between EU and the U.S.A. which to some extent extends the EU Data Protection Directive to the U.S.A.

The EU Data Directive

The EU directive and national legislation, based on it, regulates handling of personal information by organisations in EU countries.

The Safe Harbour Agreement

The Safe Harbour Agreement  Rating extends, to some extent, the EU directive to the U.S.A. American organisations can certify themselves as following certain privacy protection principles, and can then import personal information from people and organisations in EU. U.S.A. will keep a list  Rating of which U.S. companies have been certified.
