Rate the Quality of Web Pages

In the EU-funded research project SELECT, we have developed a system for rating the quality of web pages (and other Internet objects), and for finding the best pages.

SELECT provides the following services:

Rate Web Pages

  1. Go to the web page http://www.sztaki.hu/SELECT/cgi-setup.html.
  2. Drag the "Rate this" link to the toolbar of your web browser.
  3. Whenever you see a web page, which you want to rate, just click on "Rate this" in the toolbar of your web browser.

Note: For Macintosh, a special variant of "Rate this" is needed. Both are shown on the web page above.

Find Rated Web Pages

  1. Login or Register yourself as a SELECT user.
  2. Use the SELECT search form to search for rated pages.

Subscribe to News Notifications

  1. Login or Register yourself as a SELECT user.
  2. Indicate in your registration that you want news notifications by e-mail.
  3. You will then get, once a day, an e-mail listing highly rated web pages, as rated by other people who have similar rating values as yourself.

Invite People to Rate Your Links

  1. Download the AddSELECT program in Word6/95 or Word97/98 version.
  2. Make a backup copy of your web page.
  3. Run AddSELECT, which can modify your web pages and add ratings on links in it.
  4. Alternative: Add SELECT Show Ratings manually (not using the AddSELECT program) to your web pages.

Show Ratings on your own Links

  1. Download the AddSELECT program in Word6/95 or Word97/98 version.
  2. Make a backup copy of your web page.
  3. Run AddSELECT, which can modify your web pages to ask people to rate the links in your web pages when they click on them.
  4. Alternative: Add SELECT Rate Your Links manually (not using the AddSELECT program) to your web pages.

Choice of Rating Icons

When using SELECT, you can choose between three types of rating icons:

Icon Size Name Description
OK 15x15 pixels dice Small, unobtrusive dice.
OK 34x6 pixels startrans Small, unobtrusive row of stars.
OK 64x12 pixels amazonstar Larger, more visible row of stars.

Each rating icon is provided in three shadings, where a darker shading indicates that the rating is based on the ratings done by more people.
