An apple script to help in your quest

I was going to show two ways of creating HTML email. The first using Netscape Composer, the other using an apple script. I will, however, only cover

the apple script because it is less complicated and works great.

I had looked all over the internet for a way of sending HTML email on a Mac and found very limited information. Mostly it was based on the Netscape Composer way. Then I stumbled on this Apple script. Now I can't remember who wrote it or where I found (note I now do, it's by Steve Friesen) it but it does a great job so I'll at least share it with you.

There are a few things you have to do before you can use this script.

1. Any graphics you use must be on a server online.

2. All links on your HTML page must be absolute.

3. You must use MS explorer and Outlook email.

1. Okay, create your newsletter in your favorite HTML program like Golive or Dreamweaver. Once you've got it the way you want it, place the graphics online (you can place the HTML newsletter online as well if you wish). If you don't have server space, look around for free webspace like www.doteasy.com or any free space your provider may have given you. Once they are up, go to your newsletter HTML on your hard drive.

2. Make all your links to graphics or to other web pages absolute - meaning they should have a direct address associated with them. For example, your logo may be in the HTML- /images/logo.gif, but to work online it should be http://www.name.com/images/logo.gif. Now wherever your newsletter is sent it will have a direct link to the graphics.

3. Open up your HTML page in Explorer, then open your Outlook email and start a new message (send to yourself to test). Put something in the subject or it will give an error message. Now run the apple script. The script will then ask you to choose explorer or to get the file, use either as long as it's the file with the absolute links. Presto it's now in your out box. Send it along and see if it comes back the way you want.

A couple of other tips:
External style sheets won't work so use internal or none.
If you already have a page with the graphics online, just control-click-open-in-it's-own-window and copy the address of the graphic to use in your newsletter page.

Update:
Some new info on this script thanks to Heart at ehmac.com.

Send Complex HTML E [v1.0.0] (24k) - This script allows you to send complex HTML via Entourage. It gets the source of the HTML from either a saved HTML file or from the front window of IE. It is based on Steve Friesen's script for OE, but contains a number of improvements: group sending, BCC recipients, and more. (AppleScript ID=245)
