Strategic dependence:

the extent to which researchers have to persuade colleagues of the significance and importance of their problem and approach ... need to coordinate and interrelate research starteties and goals with specialist colleagues... High dependence is often the result of government policy to centralise funds, setting up clear “rules of the game” (cf EC), research programmes, etc

Strategic task uncertainty:

high means loosely coupled schools of thought, low means general agreement on research problems, tight control over research goals, minimal local autonomy, ...

Functional depencence:

to which extent researchers have to adopt to existing results, ideas, and procedures of fellow researchersin order to be consider3ed “competent”
