Movements
There are groups that have weak or unconscious ties
The perspective of society that is apart from the formalized state can be viewed from a similar perspective as
a group can be viewed.
Once you understand how society functions you will find it easier to function in any group, and vice versa. Once
society has conscious members it can develop.
Causal relationships concerning how you present yourself
- You must be seen to be free (join a group)
- You must know who you want to be before you can be seen
- And you must first defeat your fear in order to know who you want to be
- And you must be reasonably successful in order to invest your energy in challenging projects
- When you are seen it is easier to become successful
How does the movement relate to politics
The movements in culture is a specific non-directed implementation of politics
The movement is a specific implementation of collective symbols
Movements are rarely directed. Even hte prohpet is a victim of a momement
Structure of movement
Movements versus groups
- Movements are the joining of interests in order to decrease transaction costs of communication
- Movements are not as dynamic as groups based on identification. Only living groups with mutual satisfaction
of needs are truly dynamic
- Living groups must create their own rules or they will not learn how to develop their own norms
Who joins a movement
- To what extent do people make communication agreements with you. "What shall we talk about??"
- You are controlled by your culture until you can compare your own values with the values of hte culture you
live in. Example of this = Culture shock.
