CEI

Computer-enhanced instruction is defined as instruction enhanced by use of computers.

The Manitoba Association of School Superintendents has a website which discusses the three terms Computer-Assisted Instruction (CAI), Computer-Managed Instruction (CMI), and Computer-Enhanced Instruction (CEI).

"CAI refers to computer programs that provide drill and practice exercises while CMI refers to programs that evaluate and diagnose students' needs, guide them though the next step in their learning, and record their progress.

Both CAI and CMI can be used with little teacher intervention. CEI, on the other hand, requires the teacher to be involved in planning and helping to carry out learning activities.

As Kirkpatrick and Cuban say, " Teachers in CEI are viewed as essential to the learning process, because simply seating students in front of their computers to surf the Net will not result in the same learning curve as when teachers assign well-designed projects in which students use the Net to gather information.""

(The website refers to Kirkpatrick and Cuban and their article, "Computers Make Kids Smarter – Right?" in which the three kinds of computer use are discussed.)
