Abstract. How can participatory processes online be understood without relying on a simplistic view of technology and participation? How can we create more open-ended models to understand e-participation in the dynamic, fluid and highly mediated situations of contemporary society? In this thesis work, these questions are explored through an iterative process in two art works: The ( ) actory concerns how to understand participation in a global community of interest by translating its principles of organization into a digital system of cooperation. The second work emanates from Performing Structure, an art exhibition in the public space used as a platform to explore the conditions for e-participation in a local geographically constrained situation. Common to these works is the use of art as a method to increase participation in the design and research process.
