Laboratory 3. EMM-News explorer -Business Intelligence System

Introduction

In this laboratory we carry out exercises with EMM-News explorer and Google Reader.

In this laboratory we will survey a number of news channels with the EMM News explorer and News brief. EMM News explorer surveys thousand news channels with over several thousands  news articles per day. But is there any valuable information there? We will use the search engine of EMM News explorer to investigate what we to find, but we will also survey the channels to see if anything valuable will be catched.  You can always custom
EMM-News explorer and News brief to search your own language and country.

With Google Reader you will self customize Google reader and add your own news sources.

1) Search (Advanced search) for some recent news or event with EMM News brief
 
2) Is there stemming? 
 
3) Is there spelling support?

4) How is Boolean search implemented in the advanced search? Hint, it is hidden in the different search modes of the advanced search.

5) How long time back in time does the news archive stretch? Hint, try to search on old news

6) Search for old news in one or several languages. Describe what you get!

7) How many news sources and languages can you search among?

8) Now you can leave advanced search and study EMM News Explorer main menu. What do you see and what can you do?

You can custom EMM News explorer to survey on your own local language and country. Please do so or just use English.

10) Survey some recent topic that interests you. What can you see? Trends, groups, persons, relations?

11) Can you search for several languages in the same time and get the answers grouped in different languages?

12) Can you translate the news articles? Which tool is used for that?

13) Is there a news alert?

14) Propose some improvements on EMM News explorer and News Brief

Google Reader
To logon Google Reader you need a Google account. Get one and logon Google Reader. Add some RSS-feeds or  just news sites, do the tasks 1-14 above.


Extra task if you have spare time.
Try the Retriever Business Intelligence system, with the above tasks. Observe that you only can use Retriever for free at university. Just press login without writing user name or pass word.

Written statement

Write one to a half A4 page of what you did and your observations and reflections during the steps 1-14 in the laboratory. All answers must be clearly motivated and supported by your experiments. Questions about the laboratory can be asked to the laboratory assistant during the laboratory. Remember that a written statement is compulsory to be approved of the laboratory.
