Internet Search Techniques and Business Intelligence
Teknik för internetsökning och omvärldsbevakning

Course codes: ISBI/IV2002
7.5 hp (points)

This is not a course on how to use the interface of Internet search engines. The course gives an insight into the techniques for information searching applied on the Internet.

The course is delivered in English. The students are welcome to use English and Swedish.

As the course begins, the communication is carried out via the "ISBI" First Class conference.

First Class

You need a First Class account and access to the ISBI conference in order to fully follow the course. If you have a First Class account but no access to ISBI please contact Eriks Sneiders or Hercules Dalianis.

If you have no First Class account please contact Lotta Arnbom.

If you read in Swedish you may find the Introduction to First Class valuable.

Complementary Books

The course is not based on any single book, the printed literature is complementary. Still, if you want to dig deeper into the subject, you may find some of the books presented below valuable.

Informationssökning på Internet
Lars Våge, Hercules Dalianis, Lars Iselid
Studentlitteratur

It is an easy to read book in Swedish. The target audience is students who are not "professional" Internet people. The book introduces different types of search tools - search engines, web directories, meta-search engines, on-line databases - as well as advises on how to search.

The technical details on how search engines work are explained in a non-technical manner. The course covers these details also on an overview level but more thoroughly.

Please see a description and the table of content from the publisher.

An Introduction to Search Engines and Web Navigation
Mark Levene
Addison Wesley

As the title says, the book covers two areas - search engines and web navigation. Although the latter is not covered by the course it is an interesting reading close to our subject.

The technical depth of the book corresponds to the level of this course. The book covers approximately half of the breadth of the course.

Please see a description and the top-level table of content on the authors home page.

Introduction to Information Retrieval
Christopher D. Manning, Prabhakar Raghavan, Hinrich Schütze
Cambridge University Press

The book covers the science of Information Retrieval, which DSV students may find too "technical". Two lectures will explain the basics of Information Retrieval in an easier fashion.

The book is available online, chapter by chapter, in PDF and HTML.

Search Engine Marketing, Inc.
Mike Moran, Bill Hunt
IBM Press

"Driving Search Traffic to Your Company's Web Site" is the sub-title. This is a must-read for the students who work with or intend to work with e-commerce and on-line business. Ask your employer to buy the book.

Three lectures are directly relevant to the content of the book.

Please see a description and the table of content on the book's home page.

Search Engine Visibility
Shari Thurow
New Riders

A book on Search Engine Optimization pretty close to those three lectures on search engines we have.

Please see the table of content and read the book online on Google Books. The book's companion site is also available.
